The Virtual Symposium: "Young and Adult Literacy Educators: Current Situation, Challenges and Opportunities toward Professionalism
The Syrian Arab Republic, represented by the Ministry of Culture / Directorate of Adult Education and Cultural Development, the Ministry of Education / Directorate of Basic Education, and the Secretariat of the Syrian National Commission for UNESCO, beside experts of adult learning and officials in the field of education, participated in the virtual symposium that was organized by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning and the UNESCO Sector for Teacher and Skills Development. The virtual symposium was held about the topic: "Young and Adult Literacy Teachers: The Current Situation, Challenges and Opportunities toward Professionalism" on Tuesday October 6th, 2020.
The symposium focused on the following points:
- Understanding the characteristics of the teachers' profession (teachers young and adults), their current situation and work conditions.
- Defining the main challenges these teachers are experiencing before and during the Covid-19 crisis.
- Exploring how governments and development partners can strengthen the standard frameworks, policies, governance, procedures and implementation towards the professionalism of youth and adult literacy teachers.
The symposium concluded with the following points:
• Raising the awareness of countries and partners in development regarding the status of adult and young people literacy teachers.
• Defining the main challenges facing young and adult literacy teachers.
• Introducing ideas and opportunities to improve national systems, procedures, policies and implementation towards the professionalism of young people and adult literacy teachers, in addition to enhancing capacities for more thinking and action.
